Congressional Staff of Representative Giffords Advocates for TBI Reforms
Sensitive to the catastrophic harm that brain injuries can cause, Gabrielle Giffords's office staff is working actively to ensure that employer-provided health-care plans include comprehensive brain-injury care.
May 21, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- When Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head in January, few Americans would have imagined that her recovery from a traumatic brain injury would have been so rapid. Against all odds, she traveled to Florida in April to support her husband as he commands the final mission of the space shuttle Endeavor, then returned for the rescheduled launch.
The main reason behind her recovery is the top-notch medical care she received from brain injury experts such as neurosurgeons, neurologists, and occupational and physical therapists. The sad irony behind this amazing story illustrating the potential benefits of appropriate health care is that many commentators speculate that the disturbed young man who shot her was motivated by heated rhetoric about health-care reform.
While her doctors claim that Giffords's progress is in the top five percent of injury victims recovering from similar head wounds, in reality Giffords may never be able to return to her duties in Washington, as the long term effects of a traumatic brain injury can be debilitating even for those who recover better than expectations. Sensitive to the issues of brain injuries and the catastrophic harm they can cause, Giffords's office staff is reportedly working actively to ensure that employer-provided health-care plans will provide comprehensive brain-injury care when new insurance mandates are implemented in 2014. They are also encouraging the Department of Defense to expand the availability of rehabilitative therapies available to military brain injury victims.
When Negligence Causes a Serious Head Injury
Traumatic brain injuries can result from many circumstances -- for example, car or truck accidents, industrial accidents, and even slip-and-falls. Unfortunately, not every citizen has the resources or insurance to gain access to the best neurological care available. In many cases, the prognosis for recovery will not be as optimistic as it has been for Ms. Giffords. Many brain injury victims face the likelihood of a lifetime of need for ongoing medical care like physical, occupational and cognitive therapy, adaptive equipment and even attendant care, with little chance that they will be able to work or earn at their pre-TBI level.
Because of the harm caused by a TBI, it is always beneficial for the TBI victim to obtain a comprehensive assessment of the circumstances of the brain injury to determine if another party caused or contributed to the cause of the injury. Such a party could be liable for substantial damages compensation that could make a world of difference in the TBI victim's life.
