The Science of Laser Acne Treatment
Different types of acne scars require different types of technology to treat. For people considering acne laser treatment, it is essential that they understand which laser will be most effective for their skin type.

LOS ANGELES, CA, August 27, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Acne scars can be emotionally and physically difficult to deal with. Luckily, modern laser technology can reduce the appearance of acne scars tremendously. However, for people considering acne laser treatment, it is important to know which procedure is best for your skin type and the nature of your scar. At Celibre (www.celibre.com), the medical staff uses 10 different lasers all with different wavelengths to ensure that they use the best possible laser technology for their acne scar patients.

"We take the approach of using the "gold standard" laser for the particular skin condition and skin type we're treating," said Lori Haney, RN, Celibre's nurse educator. "Many offices try to use the same type of laser for different skin types and conditions, often with less-than-optimal results."

There are several different kinds of lasers to treat acne scars including the Erbium laser, the pulse dye laser and the q-switched laser. Each one is designed to treat a different type of scar for maximum aesthetic outcome. The Erbium laser is designed to treat textured acne scars - ice pick scars and hypertropic (indented) scars that have a lot of dense fibrous tissue underneath them. For more information on acne scars, please visit www.celibre.com/acne-scars.aspx.

The Erbium laser works by resurfacing the skin, removing the outer layer to get below the scar. The goal of this procedure is to leave a smoother, more-pliable layer of skin once it regenerates. The scar's age, depth, and previous laser treatments all affect the outcome of this type of treatment. However, for people with "active" acne, this procedure is not recommended.

People with red acne scars are often good candidates for pulse-dye laser treatment. This type of acne scar is marked by redness and an inflamed appearance. Pulse dye laser treatment works by reducing the redness associated with this type of acne scar. Using light and heat, the pulse dye laser treatment shrinks the blood vessels surrounding the scar, reducing redness as the scar heals.

Pulse-dye laser treatment is completely safe, although patients may feel a slight sting as the laser passes over the affected area. However, the procedure is so painless that anesthesia is not required and patients are able to return to work the same day.

For people with darker skin, q-switched laser treatments are an excellent option. The q-switched laser breaks up the acne scar's collected pigment, removing the brown mark. The q-switched laser is also effective at breaking up brown age spots and removing tattoos. One caveat, though: patients who have taken Accutane for acne in the previous six months are not recommended for this type of procedure.
